2024 Release
110.6 Proof / 55.3% ABV
Since the 1990’s, the Michter’s team has been doing pioneering work to re-establish the high quality American Rye whiskey category. The May 2015 inaugural release of Michter’s US1 Barrel Strength Rye marked yet another milestone in that quest. For maturation, the Rye distillate is entered into the barrel at 103 proof, rather than a more industry standard higher proof. Barrel entry at a lower proof of 103 rather than a higher proof costs Michter’s more money in terms of barrels and warehousing, but we believe it yields a richer, smoother, more full-bodied whiskey after proper maturation. A single barrel product, each barrel of Michter’s US1 Barrel Strength Rye is bottled at its particular alcohol level at the time of bottling. The majority of barrels in the releases range from 107 to 112 proof. To savor it is a unique experience for anyone who enjoys rye whiskey.
Tasting Notes:
Butterscotch and cinnamon with a hint of cherries on the nose; warming, rich, toasty vanilla and caramel up front with a dry oaky spice on the finish.
"It’s pretty simple: Michter’s Barrel Strength Rye once again delivers. It’s a deep, complex rye that excels across the nose, palate, and finish. It’s not superlative in each and every aspect; the nose takes a touch too long to settle, and more spice on the finish may have elevated the whiskey even further. Those nitpicks aside, this is a delicious straight rye that will hold its own against most premium bottlings in a blind flight. I’ll certainly be pouring it a few more times in the coming weeks." - David Thomas Tao, VinePair (94 Points)
"Hold on to your hats (and your wallets), Michter’s is coming out swinging for 2024. This may just be the best barrel strength rye to date." - Drew Beard, Drinkhacker (95 Points)
"The nose is packed and complex, offering a variety of rich aromas including milk chocolate, muted rye spice, mellow licorice, butterscotch, spearmint, and crème de menthe. The palate is equally loaded, with flavors of honey, sweet vanilla cream, fresh cherries, cherry coulis, and aged tobacco leaf. The finish is long and filled with baking spice, warm chocolate, earthy oak, and a spiced finale There is refined aging and great depth to this superbly integrated rye." - David Fleming, Whisky Advocate (93 Points)
